2022 Harvest Recap: Challenges & Triumphs

The 2022 harvest season at Ojai Mountain was one of remarkable fruit quality, and continued progress in sustainability. Despite ongoing drought conditions, the vineyard thrived, producing a vintage that showcases concentration, complexity, and balance.

Early Start to Harvest

The season began early, with white grapes picked on August 15 to capture fresh acidity and bright flavors. Our red blend was harvested in two phases—an initial pick on August 15 for vibrant fruit tones and a second on August 27 for deeper structure. Syrah, benefiting from additional hang time, was harvested on August 27, allowing for optimal ripeness and rich tannins. The staggered picking approach ensured that each varietal reached peak expression, contributing to a well-structured vintage.

Weather: La Niña’s Impact on Ripening

Southern California’s weather in 2022 was shaped by La Niña, which brought cooler, drier conditions and extended the state’s severe drought into a third consecutive year. A late and cool spring delayed early vine growth, but the rapid onset of summer heat accelerated ripening, pushing harvest nearly a month ahead of 2021. The season culminated in an intense Labor Day heat wave, with temperatures soaring above 100°F. To preserve fruit quality, we made the strategic decision to harvest before the temperature spike, ensuring balance and optimal ripeness.

Drought Conditions and Vine Resilience

Ojai has historically averaged 21.33 inches of annual rainfall, but recent years have fallen well below that mark. The 2021 water year saw a record low of 4.95 inches, while 2022 brought 15.02 inches—an improvement but still insufficient to reverse the drought’s effects. To support vine health, we increased irrigation more than we would have preferred, a necessary adjustment given the prolonged dry conditions. Despite these challenges, the vines remained resilient, producing healthy fruit with concentrated flavors.

Fruit Quality and Yield

The 2022 vintage delivered exceptional fruit quality. While overall yields were slightly lower due to re-grafted blocks coming online, the rest of the vineyard produced a strong crop with large clusters. Berry size varied by variety, but favorable ripening conditions enhanced complexity and deepened color, particularly in red grapes. The result is a vintage that balances richness with freshness, showcasing the unique terroir of our mountain vineyard.

Challenges and Adaptations

Fortunately, 2022 presented fewer challenges compared to previous years. The most significant adjustment was the early harvest triggered by the Labor Day heatwave, but since the grapes were already ripe, we avoided major compromises. The ongoing drought necessitated increased irrigation, which has become a reality of multiple dry years and young vines. Despite these factors, the vineyard flourished, and 2022 marked our largest production since planting in 2018.

Sustainability and the Future

A major highlight of this year was the addition of Phil Coturri to our team, a leading figure in biodynamic farming. With his expertise in mountain viticulture, we refined key sustainability practices, from pruning strategies to cover crop selection and canopy management. These improvements have already had a positive impact, ensuring stronger, healthier vines and more expressive fruit. We’re excited to continue implementing regenerative farming techniques to further enhance vineyard health and fruit quality in the years ahead.

With exceptional fruit now in the cellar, we eagerly anticipate the wines that will emerge from this remarkable vintage.
