As we approach the harvest season of 2023 at Ojai Mountain, the vineyard is buzzing with an air of anticipation and excitement. This year’s harvest is shaping up to be unlike any other, marked by its unique timing and the distinct challenges it has brought forth.
In a departure from tradition, the harvest this year is set to begin notably later than usual, the latest in our recent history. This delay can be traced back to a spring season that was unusually rainy and cloudy, leading to the flowering and grape set being postponed until June. The cool, wet conditions of June further impacted the fruit set, resulting in lower yields than expected.
However, every cloud has a silver lining. The natural thinning of the vines due to these conditions has borne an unexpected positive: the grapes, though fewer in number, are exceptionally flavorful. This points towards a vintage that promises to be extraordinary in its taste and quality.

A key factor influencing this year's vintage is the delicate balance between drought and rainfall. The adequate rains have replenished soil moisture levels, laying a robust foundation for the 2024 growing cycle. Yet, the excess rain also raised concerns about nutrient availability in the soil, potentially impacting vine health. Fortunately, our vineyard's high-altitude and the influence of the Pacific Ocean winds have played a crucial role in mitigating these risks.
Despite these challenges, the initial impressions of the 2023 vintage are very promising. The vines, adapting to the conditions, have concentrated their energy on select clusters of fruit. This has resulted in grapes with intense flavors and well-structured tannins. While we may face a limitation in quantity, the quality of the 2023 vintage at Ojai Mountain is poised to make it a standout year in our winemaking history, showcasing the resilience of nature and the art of viticulture.

As we await the culmination of this season's hard work, the 2023 harvest at Ojai Mountain is set to be a testament to the resilience of nature and the skillful craftsmanship of our winemakers. This year’s vintage is not just about the challenges overcome; it's a celebration of nature's ability to create something truly remarkable, even under the most unexpected circumstances.
