Veraison: A Turning Point in a Vineyard

Wine enthusiasts, let's talk about veraison – a pivotal moment in the life cycle of a wine grape, currently underway at our Ojai Mountain vineyard. This stage marks a significant transformation in the development of grapes, laying the foundation for the exquisite wines we cherish.

The Magic of Veraison

Before veraison, grapes are hard, acidic, and green, their color derived from chlorophyll. However, as veraison commences, a fascinating change occurs. The vine redirects its energy from the roots to the grapes, initiating a process of ripening that transforms these unassuming green berries.

For red varieties, chlorophyll gives way to anthocyanins, while white grapes see a rise in carotenoids. Alongside this color transformation, grapes begin to accumulate sugars and essential nutrients. Post-veraison, grapes swell in size, their acid levels diminish, and they start developing those enticing aroma compounds. The result? Grapes that achieve a harmonious balance, primed for harvest.

Veraison and Vineyard Care

For winemakers, veraison is more than just a visual treat; it signifies a shift in vineyard management. Each grape variety and region demands tailored care during this period to ensure optimal ripening. Typically, the countdown to harvest begins now, usually occurring 45 to 60 days after full veraison.

Battling the Challenges

This stage isn't without its challenges. The ripening grapes, now sweeter and more appealing, attract unwanted attention from pests. Many vineyards, including ours, resort to netting to protect the precious fruit from these critters.

Moreover, uneven ripening presents a significant hurdle, especially with capricious varieties like Pinot Noir, Sangiovese, Malbec, Gewürztraminer, and Zinfandel. These grapes demand extra vigilance and care to ensure uniform ripening, a crucial factor in quality wine production.

The Effort Behind Every Sip

So, the next time you savor a delightful glass of wine, take a moment to appreciate the meticulous care and effort that went into cultivating each grape. Veraison is not just a phase in grape development; it's a testament to the dedication and passion of winegrowers, a period where the foundation of your favorite wine is laid. At Ojai Mountain, we celebrate this stage, knowing it brings us one step closer to sharing our labor of love with you. Cheers to veraison, the herald of good things to come!
