Ojai Mountain winery and vineyard celebrates five years

Five years after its inaugural 2020 vintage, Ojai Mountain Estate has established itself as one of California's most distinctive high-elevation producers, earning critical acclaim and a devoted following.

We've seen harsh conditions: the second driest year followed by the wettest.

Founded in 2018 when the vineyard was planted at 2,800 feet on Sulphur Mountain, the estate produces approximately 500 cases annually of organically grown, regeneratively farmed Rhône varieties. Winemaker Erich Bradley, who also co-founded Sojourn Cellars in Sonoma, brings 25+ vintages of experience to the project.

"We've seen harsh conditions: the second driest year followed by the wettest," Bradley reflects on the vintages. The extreme elevation provides both challenges and opportunities: dramatic diurnal temperature swings preserve natural acidity while allowing full phenolic ripeness. The fractured Monterey shale soil contributes distinct minerality.

The wines have earned impressive recognition: 96 points from Vinous for the 2022 Syrah, 95 points and Cellar Selection from Wine Enthusiast for the 2023 Mourvèdre, and features in Forbes, Wine Enthusiast, San Francisco Chronicle, and Vinous. The estate was also selected as the only Ventura County producer for the Vinous Icons 2026 Cool-Climate California Masterclass in New York City.
